Compulsion Games is now officially listed as the publisher for South of Midnight on Steam, finalizing the studio's operational detachment from Microsoft's Xbox division.
Independent Studio Status
The change on the Steam storefront reflects Compulsion Games regaining its independence alongside Double Fine during a major restructuring phase at Xbox. As part of this separation, the studio retained the intellectual property rights to South of Midnight, as well as its previous titles Contrast and We Happy Few.
Storefront Discrepancies
While PC users purchasing the game on Steam now transact directly under Compulsion Games' independent label, console infrastructure lags behind the shift. PlayStation and Xbox storefront listings continue to attribute publishing duties to Microsoft, indicating that backend updates for console ecosystems have not yet caught up with the PC release.
This transition establishes Compulsion Games as a self-publishing entity on PC. Direct sales on Steam now route through the studio rather than Xbox's first-party pipeline, granting the developer full autonomy over its distribution channel on that platform while console distribution agreements remain tied to the legacy arrangement.
