During the closing ceremonies of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco, The Pokémon Company officially announced Pokémon: Wild Card, an original feature-length anime movie scheduled for a worldwide release in 2027. The project shifts the franchise's traditional cinematic focus away from wilderness exploration and monster battles, centering the entire narrative on the competitive Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG).
Creative Staff and Animation Production
Animation studio CloverWorks is producing the film under the direction of Katsuhiko Kitada, with character designs handled by veteran animator Akemi Hayashi. The reveal teaser showcased the film's art style and central protagonist: a dedicated card game player wearing a yellow Mimikyu-themed hoodie, accompanied by a ghostly, semi-transparent incarnation of Mimikyu that mirrors the player's actions during tabletop competition.
The production framework merges tactical card play with dynamic visual sequences that bring card illustrations and attack effects to life. Rather than staging conflicts in gyms or tournament arenas populated by real creatures, Pokémon: Wild Card frames high-stakes drama around card drafting, hand management, and the tactical pacing of official Pokémon TCG tournaments.
Longest Theatrical Hiatus in Franchise History
Pokémon: Wild Card marks the end of a seven-year gap in the franchise's feature film production, serving as the first theatrical anime release since 2020's Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle. This represents the longest span without a feature-length film since the series debuted its annual movie model in 1998, reflecting a recalibration of how animated Pokémon stories are conceptualized and distributed.
The film is also only the second animated project in the franchise's history to focus exclusively on card game competition, following the 2024 miniseries Path to the Peak. By establishing an independent protagonist separate from the established anime continuity of Ash Ketchum or the mainline television series, the film expands the narrative scope of the franchise to mirror the real-world competitive circuit.
Global Release and Multiplatform Distribution
The Pokémon Company has scheduled Pokémon: Wild Card for a simultaneous international launch in 2027. The rollout will encompass theatrical runs in primary markets alongside global streaming distribution, ensuring synchronized availability across regional territories. Additional technical specifications, including full cast rosters, runtime details, and promotional gameplay tie-ins, are scheduled to be published as production advances toward the 2027 premiere.
