Jagex canceled RuneScape Reignited on October 15 following widespread community backlash. The reversal comes less than two weeks after the studio revealed the project at RuneFest 2026.

  • Plugins launch on Monday, October 19.
  • A 10-day free trial grants access to Members worlds from December 2 to December 12.
  • Eligibility for the free trial requires a new character or an account inactive since June 2.
  • RuneScape 4 is in development as a next-generation title using Unreal Engine.

Backlash Over Split Economies

Players pushed back immediately against the initial announcement. The core criticism focused on fears of splintered player populations and separate in-game trading economies.

Jagex addressed the criticism in an official blog post and an accompanying YouTube video. Associate creative director Mod Ryan explained the choice to halt development.

"We received a ton of different perspectives from all of you, and we truly appreciate everyone sharing their views. It is super important to us because the last time we didn't listen to player feedback, combat changed forever. And it has taken us over a decade to recover from that. Now I said on stage that we would not repeat the same mistakes of the past, and I truly stand by that. Considering this, we have made the decision to cancel Reignited"

Preserving the Existing Community

The cancellation keeps the current player base unified on existing worlds rather than dividing users across separate infrastructure. Mod Ryan outlined the studio's direction during the update.

"It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it. Our goal is to see RuneScape grow again, with returning players coming back and new players joining, but never at the expense of our existing community."

The studio will instead focus resources on core game updates while monitoring ongoing feedback.

"The future of RuneScape is still extremely bright. RuneScape will always be built for and defined by its community. So please keep letting us know when you feel we're getting it wrong and shout with that same energy when you think we're getting it right too"

Jagex will continue operating under its established 2027 development roadmap.
