Naughty Dog has confirmed that multiple projects set within The Last of Us universe are currently in development, running parallel to an independent community-driven effort by PC modders to resurrect the franchise's canceled multiplayer mode.

Studio pipeline and leadership shift

In a recent interview with The Washington Post, studio co-president Neil Druckmann verified that Naughty Dog remains actively engaged with the intellectual property. However, Druckmann's direct involvement in the franchise is temporarily paused. He is currently serving as director on Naughty Dog's upcoming new intellectual property, the sci-fi project Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Because of this production schedule, Druckmann is not participating in the upcoming third season of HBO's television adaptation, which features actor Kaitlyn Dever in the role of Abby. Naughty Dog has not disclosed specific release timelines, formats, or narrative details for the newly teased games within the universe, though studio communications indicate these titles will advance following the completion of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

PC community builds Factions

While the official studio shifts focus, the PC modding community is directly addressing the void left by the termination of The Last of Us Online. Sony and Naughty Dog formally canceled the standalone multiplayer project, often referred to as Factions, in late 2023.

A dedicated group of PC modders is completing a functional four-versus-four multiplayer mode built directly within the framework of The Last of Us Part II. The unauthorized project replicates core mechanics from the envisioned multiplayer suite, including tactical four-player squad combat, close-quarters melee systems, and complex special executions. Developers of the mod are targeting a public release this month.

The simultaneous progression of official studio concepts and grassroots community development ensures that The Last of Us remains active on multiple fronts. Naughty Dog retains long-term control over the franchise canon and its future expansion, while PC users will soon access playable multiplayer content generated entirely outside the corporate pipeline.

This grassroots initiative highlights a persistent demand for cooperative and competitive gameplay within the post-apocalyptic setting, a component that has been absent since the original Factions mode launched alongside the PlayStation 3 version of the first game in 2013. Even though corporate priorities shifted toward single-player narrative experiences, the community's determination demonstrates how deeply ingrained the multiplayer aspect became for a dedicated segment of the player base.

As Naughty Dog charts its course away from the multiplayer space to focus on expansive cinematic adventures and entirely new universes like Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, the franchise's trajectory is diverging into distinct official and unofficial streams. Whether these newly confirmed internal projects will eventually incorporate online elements remains undisclosed, but the studio's overarching stewardship guarantees that the brand will continue to evolve significantly across both interactive entertainment and prestige television adaptations in the coming years.
