Dave Marsh, the influential rock critic, author, and founding editor of Creem magazine, died on Friday, August 14, at his home in Connecticut. He was 76.
A Legacy of Rock Criticism
Marsh passed away following an extended period of declining health, though an exact cause of death was not disclosed. His death was confirmed by his friend Jim Rotolo. Throughout his career, Marsh authored approximately 25 books, defining the standard for modern music journalism through his work for publications including Creem and Rolling Stone.
Defining Springsteen and Punk
Among his extensive bibliography, Marsh published the foundational 1979 Bruce Springsteen biography, Born to Run. Beyond print, his broadcasting footprint included co-creating SiriusXM's E Street Radio and hosting the Kick Out the Jams program for 19 years. He is also credited with coining the term "punk rock" in a 1971 article.
Marsh's death removes one of his generation's most rigorous evaluators of popular music. His critical approach and historical documentation fundamentally shaped how rock music is analyzed and preserved.
