Sony Interactive Entertainment has blocked the release of a fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2. Modder and YouTuber Speclizer cancelled the project following a formal request from the company.

Development and Features

Speclizer began developing the multiplayer mod in January. The project progressed from an early test phase into a functional experience.

"We've gone from a buggy 1v1 test to something that actually feels like a real multiplayer mode"

The cancelled project included public matchmaking and a loadout system. Speclizer planned to release the mod to the public this month.

Sony Intervention

Speclizer received a formal letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment asking for the project to remain unreleased. The creator shared the update with followers after halting all work.

"Hey everyone, as you all know, the TLOU 2 multiplayer mod that has been in development since January was supposed to release this month"

"Unfortunately I recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting for the mod not to be released. Extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day but I hope you'll continue to follow me onto the next project, this time something of my own. Thank you all for the incredible amount of support over the last year. I hope to bring you something bigger and better soon!"

The cancellation means the multiplayer mod will not launch, and Speclizer will direct future efforts toward an original endeavour.

The developer expressed disappointment that the project ultimately will not see the light of day. Despite the setback, the modder thanked the community for the incredible amount of support received over the last year. Looking ahead, Speclizer intends to channel these experiences into building something bigger and better for the audience.

The creator confirmed that the upcoming release has been permanently shelved due to the legal intervention by the publisher. With the modification officially dead, attention shifts toward the creator's previously unannounced proprietary venture that will occupy development schedules instead of community patches.
