Sony has confirmed that it will phase out all physical media across the PlayStation ecosystem by January 2028, enforcing a strictly digital-only model for all future releases.
Comprehensive Digital Transition Policy
The mandate applies universally across the platform. First-party releases, third-party titles, and the existing code-in-the-box retail format, which includes a physical box containing only a digital download voucher, will all cease. Retailers will no longer receive physical disc inventory for PlayStation software once the policy takes effect.
Retail Packaging and Hardware Warnings
In preparation for the transition, Sony has updated the packaging and documentation for current disc-drive PlayStation 5 hardware bundles. New units now include explicit warning notices regarding the upcoming discontinuation of optical media support. These inserts inform consumers of the approaching hardware shift toward exclusive digital distribution via the PlayStation Store.
Market Impact and Ecosystem Control
The definitive cutoff date terminates the secondary market for used PlayStation games, eliminating physical trade-ins, rentals, and long-term offline preservation of game discs. From January 2028 onward, software pricing, availability, and access will rest entirely under the direct control of Sony's centralized digital storefront.
