DC Comics has announced an animated Batman: Knightfall trilogy, alongside structural updates regarding the live-action DC Universe slate led by James Gunn.
The Knightfall Animation Project
The newly announced animated trilogy adapts the 1990s comic book storyline centered on Bruce Wayne’s physical defeat by Bane. Chuck Dixon and Graham Nolan, co-creators of Bane and key contributors to the original print run, are attached to the project. The trilogy aims to faithfully recreate the multi-issue narrative arc where the Dark Knight's spine is broken, leading to a prolonged absence from the cowl.
The Brave and the Bold DCU Integration
Parallel to the animation initiative, development continues on Batman: The Brave and the Bold within Gunn’s live-action DC Universe. First outlined in early 2023, the film draws heavily from Grant Morrison’s comic run. The production will introduce the wider Bat-Family to the cinematic continuity, incorporating figures such as Alfred Pennyworth and Dick Grayson in his Nightwing persona, moving away from the isolated-hero archetype seen in previous franchises.
These concurrent initiatives establish a dual-track strategy for the intellectual property. DC is simultaneously mining its historical publishing milestones for dedicated animation adaptations while integrating the broader mythos into the core cinematic universe.
