Hayden Panettiere, the actor widely recognized in the geek industry for voicing Kairi in the Kingdom Hearts franchise, has passed away at the age of 36.
Iconic Video Game Roles
Panettiere established a significant presence in gaming through major voice and performance-capture roles. She served as the original English voice of Kairi across multiple titles in the Kingdom Hearts series, including the original game, Kingdom Hearts II, and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, while also voicing the character Xion. Beyond Square Enix’s flagship RPG, she portrayed Samantha "Sam" Giddings in the 2015 survival horror game Until Dawn and reprised the role for its 2024 remake. Her extensive screen career also included prominent television performances in the series Heroes and Nashville.
Industry Tributes
The gaming community and her former colleagues responded to the news with immediate statements. Co-star Alyson Stoner and other industry peers shared public tributes recognizing her contributions to television and interactive media. Square Enix also issued an official statement of condolence acknowledging her work on the Kingdom Hearts series.
Her death results in the loss of a defining voice actor from major role-playing and horror titles of the past two decades, leaving notable vacancies in ongoing franchises where her performances shaped central characters.
