SpaceX has committed $100 billion to construct a second major spaceport, designated Starbase Louisiana, in Vermilion Parish along the Gulf Coast. The facility will be built on a former Exxon property and will include dedicated launch pads, industrial-scale propellant production facilities, and an on-site airport to support heavy logistical operations.

Infrastructure and Timeline

Construction on the sprawling site is slated to begin between late 2026 and 2027. SpaceX targets initial operations and the first orbital launch from the Louisiana location between 2029 and 2030. The massive industrial footprint is designed to provide an unconstrained coastal launch corridor capable of handling high-frequency flight rates for the Starship vehicle.

The project will generate significant regional employment, adding 3,000 direct jobs over a ten-year ramp-up period with an average annual salary of $92,600. Peak construction phases will mobilize more than 30,000 workers to build out the massive concrete pads, integration towers, and propellant refineries required for sustained operations.

Scaling Starship Operations

This second spaceport underpins SpaceX's long-term strategy to scale up Starship flight rates for heavy-payload deployments, including next-generation Starlink satellite constellations and orbital data centers.

The new Gulf Coast facility provides the geographical capacity needed as the company prepares to phase out its current Falcon rocket fleet entirely. Once Starship achieves full reusability and regulatory clearance for frequent commercial flights from multiple domestic sites, Starbase Louisiana will serve as a primary node for deep-space logistics and high-cadence Earth orbit missions.

The strategic choice of Vermilion Parish also offers distinct geographical advantages over the original Boca Chica location in Texas. By spreading heavy launch operations across multiple coastal sites, SpaceX can optimize trajectory profiles for different orbital inclinations while mitigating logistical bottlenecks. The integration of an on-site airport will further streamline the transport of sensitive avionics, heavy-lift components, and engineering teams directly to the perimeter of the complex, ensuring minimal transit delays during critical testing windows.

State and local officials have welcomed the unprecedented capital injection, anticipating a massive boost to the regional economy and related maritime supply chains. Infrastructure upgrades to surrounding highways and deep-water ports will be necessary to accommodate the influx of heavy materials and industrial equipment required to erect the launch towers and cryogenic storage farms. As environmental reviews and preliminary engineering studies progress, Starbase Louisiana stands to transform the Gulf Coast into one of the preeminent commercial aerospace hubs in the world.
